TIPS FOR SHEDDING THE STRESS
TIP #1: GIVE YOURSELF THE GIFT OF SELF CARE
While you’re busy shopping and doing for others, it’s easy to put yourself in the back seat. Unfortunately, avoiding the physical and emotional aches and pains of your body and mind will have you burned out by New Year’s Day.
Put time on your calendar for you! A massage, facial treatment, or acupuncture session are great ways to reduce anxiety and stress. (We know, it’s shameless self-promotion, but it works!) Whether you’re anxious for a family gathering, or stressed about the financial obligations of the season, self-care services can significantly reduce the physical consequences of stress.
TIP #2: HAVE A FLEXIBLE MINDSET FOR TRADITIONS
Are you putting pressure on yourself to live up to family traditions? Perhaps you’re tense about a new lifestyle that makes this year’s holiday look a little different. As families grow, change, and move, the holidays may be affected. Don’t beat yourself up on events you can’t control! Be flexible and realize that this holiday season could be your chance to start new traditions.
TIP #3: WALK OUT YOUR STRESS
There’s no question that you’ll rack up your steps while going from store to store. And, while running around buying gifts can be fun for some, it is not relaxing for all. Get away from the crowds and go for a walk alone, especially outside if weather permits. Walking around the block in your quiet community will allow your mind to decompress from the commotion.
Did you know that the repetitive motion of walking decreases anxiety and improves sleep? Plus, with the unavoidable, yet delicious holiday meals and desserts, going for a walk can help burn off those additional calories!
TIP #4: DON’T BE AFRAID TO SAY NO
During the holidays, it’s easy to want to please others. When it’s all said and done, your calendar is filling up quickly, leaving little time for yourself. Although going to parties is excellent for your social life, the nightly gatherings can take a toll on your mental health. Always being on the go and interacting with people can be exhausting! This season put yourself first, and try to say “no” to obligations that put unnecessary stress on your body.
TIP #5: MAKE A NO-DEVICE RULE
The holidays are supposed to be about good times with friends and family, but that’s hard to do with a screen between you and your loved ones. The constant “dings” from emails, texts, and social media posts only add to your stress. At your gatherings, encourage everyone to put their devices away. Not only will you be more present during the festivities, but you’ll decrease your anxiety levels, too.
