Here at Back to Health Chiropractic, Acupuncture & Wellness Center, we’re all about helping you live the life you want. Often that means forming plans to address medical conditions, relieve you of pain or discomfort, or diagnose ailments.
Other times, however, we are simply here to accommodate what you need. This is the case with Department of Transportation medical examinations, which are a necessity for many of our patients. If you are a commercial driver and need a DOT examination, you can come to us.
Want to know more about how it works? Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about Department of Transportation exams, so you can plan effectively and make sure you’re always in compliance with the law.
What Is a DOT Medical Examination?
The DOT medical examination is a basic physical exam that determines whether or not you are safe to operate a commercial motor vehicle, and is necessary for renewing your commercial driver’s license. The National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners is a list of medical providers qualified to administer DOT exams, and as we are on that list, we would be happy to help you fulfill your test requirements today.
Why Do I Need One?
You will need to complete and pass a DOT exam if you have a commercial driver’s license of any kind. This includes truck drivers, bus drivers and school bus drivers, for instance. Specifically, it includes anyone who drives more than 10,000 pounds of weight, who drives a vehicle that requires placards for hazardous materials, or who transports more than 15 people. These requirements may vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, and they may change, so make sure you’re always up on the rules.
How Often Must I Perform a DOT Exam?
DOT examination records are good for two years. It’s important that you schedule another DOT exam for a time before the two years is up, so that you have the records in hand in time to renew your license before it lapses.
Who Has the Records of an Exam?
Both you and your examiner will get a copy of the exam for recordkeeping. You will have one copy to take with you to the DMV when renewing your license, and the medical examiner will draw up a Medical Examiner's Certificate to keep on file no less than three years. If for some reason you should lose yours, you can contact us to get another copy.
